Mike Searle on Why Mountains Exist
Mike Searle is Professor of Earth Sciences at Oxford University. He studies how mountain belts evolve, focusing especially on the chains of mountains that stretch from the Himalaya to the Alps. As a classical field geologist and intrepid rock-climber, he has explored, mapped, and geologically interpreted much of the Himalaya, the Karakoram, the Tibetan Plateau, and Southeast Asia. He has also investigated the Oman mountains in Arabia and their metamorphic rocks and ocean crust (ophiolite).
